About Ethiopian Tribes

With more than 50 unique tribes living in the Omo River Region of Southwestern Ethiopia, it’s a fascinating destination for those interested in African cultures. The remote location, which is barely accessible by 4 wheel-drive, has meant that traditional customs and beliefs are very much intact for most of these tribes.

We cover Ethiopian tribes on this website.

I just want to say that I am so glad that I found this site. I am glad because this kind of information is not taught in school. At least not in grade school. I feel that as an
African American, we should know as much about African history as possible. I am particularly interested in the Oromo people and the Gadaa system. I didn’t know that Oromos existed until very recently. Your web site is providing for me some very rich and valuable informtion. I am very pleased with what I am learning about the Oromo people and I am praying for them and their struggle. Keep up the good work in providing this kind of information. God bless you,
    Sandra

We are adopting a 2 year old Ethiopian boy through Hope Orphanage in Addis Ababa and he has tribal markings on his eyelids – verticle slashes-scars. Do you know which tribe or area this would be from in Ethiopia? I am trying to gather information for his baby book.

  • The day will come soon

Hei DR AMY EMCH! I can say that the baoy is most probably from Wolaytta? or (surely from southern ethiopian nations)

  • Sami Akaki

Your site reminds me of TV programme in the ‘Who do you think you are’
My family name is Akaki. I thought I was a Ugandan, but my ancestors may have come from Akaki Kality. I was recently in Ethiopia and I went to Akaki where I was surprised to find that there is a place called ‘Korkor’. I was born in a little village in Uganda caked ‘Akokoro’!

I was also intrigued to read that the word “Amhara” means pleasing, gracious. In my tribal language, “amamri” means “I love you, or love!

I am getting the feeling that this site is made by fifth grader because most fifth graders tend to forget all the tribes and only talk about what mommy and daddy have told them in the past.

The point is, this all opinionated site because there are tones of tribes and not just two tribes. For those of you who are trying to learn about various tribes, I suggest you go to some reliable source.
