The Oromo are a native African ethnic group found in Ethiopia and to a smaller extent in Kenya. They are the largest single ethnic group in Ethiopia, at 32.1% of the population according to the 1994 census, and today numbering around 40 million.
The Oromo are one of the Cushitic speaking people living in Eastern and North Eastern Africa. Cushitic speakers have occupied parts of north-eastern and eastern Africa for as long as recorded history.
Oromo people are found mainly in Ethiopia (99%), but are spread from as far as:
• Northern Ethiopia (southern Tigray Region)
• Kenya (mainly northern)
• Even as far south as Lamu Island
The Oromo characterize one of largest of the Cushitic groups occupying the Horn of Africa. Their physical features, culture, language and other confirm clearly the fact that they are native to this part of Africa.
Existing information indicates that the Oromo lived as a community of people for thousands of years in East Africa (Prouty at al, 1981).
Bates (1979) asserts, “The Gallas (Oromo) were a very ancient race, the indigenous stock, possibly, on which most other peoples in this part of eastern Africa have been grafted”.
It is possible that they have existed for a longer period of time side by side with their northern Semitic-speaking neighbors.
During the 16th century, following the wars between the kingdom of Ethiopia and the neighboring Sultanate of Adal, which resulted in the exhaustion of both states, Oromos moved north into their territories.
The Ethiopian monk Bahrey, writing in 1593, credited the Oromo achievement to the existence of too many non-fighting classes in the ruling Ethiopian hierarchy, as opposed to the Oromos, whom he illustrated as having a homogeneous warrior class.
He also affirmed their spread (as result of their inhospitable homeland) into northwestern areas such as:
• Arsi
• Shewa
• Welega
• Gojjam
• Hararghe
• Wollo
Harold G. Marcus hints northwest Borena as the original homeland of the Oromo. Settled Oromo began to integrate with their Amharic-speaking neighbors at least from the 17th century on.
Several Oromo chieftains gained power in government of the monarchy. Particularly Emperor Iyoas I (1730-55), who was half Oromo, favored his mother’s Oromo kinsmen and allies, and in his era, the Oromo language was the language of the court in Gondar.
By the late 18th century, the influence of the central government of Ethiopia had declined, and local governors and kings enjoyed greater autonomy.
During the era of Zemene Mesafint (which lasted until 1855), the Oromo dynasty of chiefs of Yejju were the most important uninterrupted line of warlords to dominate the figurehead emperors of Ethiopia.
They turn out to be sub-kings of Begemder, Regents of the empire, as well as imperial father-in-laws. Ras Ali I of Yejju attained this dominance in 1779, and it continued, although contested by other warlords, until the 1855 defeat of Ras Ali II of Yejju by the upstart Kassa Hailu (who became Emperor Tewodros II).
Due to the powerlessness of the Emperor of Ethiopia during the Zemene Mesafint, the Yejju Oromo were successfully the rulers of Ethiopia. Other tribes and chiefs of the Oromo people were also famous, such as:
• Lady Menen of Wollo who became Empress in 1800s
• Ras Mohammad of Wollo who became Ras Mikael, later Negus of Siyon and father of Emperor Iyasu V
• Menen, of Ambassel, who became Empress Consort of Haile Selassie

I accepted his apology and told him not to use that word again on me. Interesting read. However, the debate disheartens me. The world is 4.5 billion years old and even though the history of humanity is but a tiny portion of this vast history, we’ve still been around for a long time. The structures of societies change, the people intermingle and change, humanity and our reality as we know it is fluid and is in a constant state of mutation. People were nomadic and settled with people of other areas. Humanity’s history is hardly a peaceful one, with many invasions and suppressions and the like. But the strange thing is that because of this fluidity, things shift, people are created and nations born. I don’t think it’s fair to claim a land for your own when the land is simply a creation in itself meant to sustain the life of all who inhabit it, who cares where you’re from, we’re all essentially human beings who would bleed the same blood when cut. As it stands now, ethiopia is one nation, belonging to many different ethnicities but because of this variety, commoness in certain affaires is necessary…how else would we be able to talk. Admittedly, it is a bit strange that an ethnic minority would be the political choice, but if not Amharic, it would have been Oromo, or Tigray, or Gurage, or whatever…but that doesn’t change the fact that all these ethnicities are part of the ethiopian nation…get a grip people.

Watching Barack Obama’s speech on race yesterday, I couldn’t help it but draw parallels between the racial devide in the USA and the ethnic problems in Ethiopia. I remember reading Asafa Jalata’s book which compares the African American and Oromo experiance. Just like African Americans were treated badly by whites in the past, Oromos have been treated badly ever since Oromo land is incorporated to the Ethiopian Empire. Oromos were sold as slaves by Abyssinian slave traders. Just like African Americans have been called the N word, Oromos are called by the G word:

All these, though most of them are things of the past, created anger and bitterness in the Oromo community. To add insult to injury, there are some who still exasperate the situation for Oromos. Oromos don’t want to be associated with people who don’t have respect for them, dehumanize them, exploit them, tarnish their culture and treat them like a second class citizen. Other Ethiopians, mostly Amharas, preach of UNITY all the time. Unity is good; but if our union is full of injustice and strife, we’re better off separatly. Right now, we are in a stalemate and to get out of this mess we need a “more perfect UNION”. How could we perfect our union?
For starters, we need to accept historical facts and condemn past and on going injustices. Secondly, we need to change our forced union into a coalition of the willing. That is where self-determination comes in. And lastly, we need to creat a society that believes in Justice and Equality. Only afterwards, we could have a strong union otherwise the resentment and bitterness will consume our souls and lead us to unwanted and tragic end.

Because my father and my grandfather were the one fighting there enemies (habash,and any other enemies) of our land and people ,when your father is giving them the other side off his cheek to be slapped again and again. If all of our oromo people do the same we would not be with out Oromia now. thank you very much and don’t think every oromo is as chicken as some of you are. fight for your right and your Oromiya back that is the only way.

Hello friends! May the GOD bless all of you! The litrature shows more or less good overview of Oromo people. But who are giving comments? Except some matured and talent like ROBERA, they are just illitrate. Hei, Oromo people are not easy as the name looks easy to remember. Who are backbones? Isn’t it better to have good knowledge about Oromo, the innocent people who fight for their own land, than defaming each other and other people?
The truth will come! God is raghtious and will respond to the truth……
